How much cheese do I need?

“I’m making a cheese board for [INSERT # HERE] people. How much cheese do I need?”

We get asked this question a lot so we thought it would make the perfect cheesy trivia for today.

A good rule of thumb is 1-1.5 ounces of each style of cheese per guest being served.

For example, if you’re making a board for 4 people, you’d use about 4 ounces (or 1/4 pound) of each style of cheese.

Some other tips on ingredient quantities:

  1. Know your audience. If there aren’t too many adventure seekers in the group and you’re using a funky washed rind or blue, you might want to go lighter.

  2. Estimate charcuterie items at about 1/2 or 1/3 of whatever weight you’re using for cheese. Again, taking our 4 person serving size, you’d plan about 2-3 ounces of each meat.

  3. If you’re serving a runny, gooey cheese like a Fromager D’Affinois or Brillat Savarin, you can go a little heavier. The double and triple creams will ooze on the board and you’ll want to account for that. (Plus people generally go nuts for those soft luscious cheeses!).
